Solid State is a non-profit economic development organization that builds worker co-ops with racialized communities in Surrey. About The Role:
The Director of Community Services & Engagement at Solid State Community Industries is a leadership role focused on overseeing community services, membership engagement, policies and agreements with members, outreach initiatives, and partnerships that support worker cooperatives and racialized communities in Surrey. The position falls within the Community Services Circle at Solid State, and is also responsible for managing budgets and administrative systems, coordinating member onboarding and support, and fostering relationships with community organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will lead collaborative projects, ensure effective communication across teams, and promote an inclusive, community-led approach aligned with cooperative values and solidarity economics.
Responsibilities:
Community Services Leadership, Administration & Direction
Circle Leadership: Mentor and support Community Services Circle staff, lead collaborative organization and coordination of the work within the Community Services Circle, step in to support all Circle staff as-needed.
Circle Communications: Monitor Community Services Circle projects and communicate across Solid State Circles about the progress, Prepare meeting agendas, record minutes, and track action items
Meetings: Participate in weekly Circle meetings, weekly stand-ups, and monthly staff meetings.
Administration: Administering CanTrust and CanWork systems.
Space Access: Monitor space access, including keyholder policies, and ensuring the community is up to date about access procedures and closures.
Financial Management: Leading Community Services Circle finances, including budgeting, float card management, and expense tracking.
Property Communication: Communication and coordination with the landlord and property management, as needed.
Membership Management & Engagement
Policies: Develop, maintain, and update membership policies, agreements, or procedures.
Conflict Engagement + Response: Coordinate response in the event of policy, agreement, or procedure violation.
Database Management: Manage the membership database and maintain accurate, confidential records.
Onboarding/Offboarding: Coordinate membership onboarding, offboarding, updating, and orientations, including for staff, internal members, general members, and external partners.
Membership Support: Respond to member inquiries and coordinate Circle response to support requests as needed.
WhatsApp Community Group: Administrate the community group and share resources, opportunities, and event information regularly.
Community Wellness: Monitor community member and staff wellness, and proactively initiate support and action from the Community Services Circle as needed.
Evaluation & Improvement: Monitor engagement trends and recommend improvements to member experience.
Outreach
Outreach Strategy & Direction: Support the outreach staff with overall strategy and direction, and check-in regularly to ensure the staff is feeling supported and on-track for intake deadlines.
Partnership, Collaboration & Relationship Development + Management: Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, cooperatives, values-aligned businesses, educational institutions, and other partner agencies
Recruitment, Training, & Scheduling of Staff + Volunteers
Maintain Resources + Materials for Outreach in Coordination with the Communications & Engagement Circle
Track, Evaluate, & Pivot Outreach Activities As-Needed
Temporary Election to General Circle Role

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website.
